Nurse

This character was designed to be an 'unexpected hero'. After the I found some fun shapes to work with I constructed her general anatomy with volumetric primitives.

Cowboy Sketch

This is a quick sketch of an intimidating villainous cowboy.

Western Jon

...And then there's this guy...
This started as a bizarre emoticon like face (basically two dots with a sideways capitol D in between them)that one of my students had drawn on the dry erase board, which I then turned into an entire body and face with some of my features on it, like hair and glasses. He also got my western gear from my Halloween costume. He was too goofy to not do anything with. I sent him to Amanda, who added color. For such a ridiculous, simple design, it has been a fun collaboration.

Appealing Shapes

For this, I drew about 30 abstract shapes focusing only on design. I was looking for straights vs. curves, small medium and large areas, motion and force, and general appeal. After I found one that I liked, I made it into this character.

Preservation

This is another chapter header for Nationundead.com. This chapter is 'Preservation', in which humans are forced to board up the windows and hole up in safe houses. Again, this one leaves a lot to the imagination. I used a wide open composition juxtaposed against this cramped, broken down old house to hopefully get a feeling of claustrophobia in open space. I think it has a a soft beauty to it, along with a strange unrest.

Blackout

This is a digital painting I created for a website I helped create called Nationundead.com. This painting served as a header for the chapter 'Blackout', in which the electricity has gone out due to zombie infestation. I wanted it to be ominous, and to leave a lot to the imagination. Is that a zombie about to come downstairs or someone checking the light bulb? Would you be willing to check out a scary looking basement, or are you the type to hide, and hole up in the basement?

Faculty Poster

This is a poster made by the PR department at Ai, to highlight me as a faculty member.

Pitch Boards

Here are five pitch boards for a Chevy speculative spot using the 'Trunk Monkey' ad campaign as inspiration: A couple friends show up to a baseball game and find that traffic, along with a snobby parking attendant prevent them from getting to their tail-gating, so they summon the trunk monkey who saves the day and gets some sweet action.

These went through several revisions. This is what my workspace looked like during the process.

Horse Boards

These are quick thumbnail boards for a potential story: A horse is captured and escapes.

I drafted this on the dry erase board at Ai before class. I do a lot of my brainstorming sketching on dry erase boards these days. Theres something about how not permanent it is, as well as drawing with the whole body, that I find very liberating.

Stretch Folds and Compression Folds

I like these as examples of stretch folds and compression folds. I wore an over sized football jersey and did some exaggerated poses for these.

Figure Drawing: Line Quality Study

This drawing was made for a figure drawing class. My goal was to study overlapping shapes with foreshortening along with the effect of bold vs soft line qualities to create depth.
